Title: Hypodontia - Prosthodontic considerations for multidisciplinary cases.

Aims and objectives:

  • To review the challenging features of hypodontia that impact multidisciplinary and prosthodontic planning and treatment
  • To highlight prosthodontic approaches for speciifc congenital tooth absence scenarios
  • To describe approaches to adhesive techniques that are appropriate in patient suffering hypodontia
  • To outline how dental implants can be used to overcome the challenges faced in these patients

Biography:
Originally from West Wales,  Matthew graduated from the Dental School at the University of Wales College of Medicine in 2004 with Distinction.  He was awarded academic prizes in every year of his degree, culminating in the DENTSPLY award for excellence for the highest overall examination mark.  He completed his specialist training in 2012 and is a registered specialist in Restorative Dentistry, Endodontics, Periodontitcs and Prosthodontics.

Dr Thomas serves as a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry and Oral Rehabilitation in South East Wales providing clinical services at Hospitals in Cardiff and Newport.  He is the Clinical lead for Restorative Dentistry at the University Dental Hospital in Cardiff and an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry for the School of Dentistry, Cardiff University.

Dr Thomas performs dental rehabilitation of patients with Congenital Oral Anomalies (primarily Hypodontia) that have often been managed through a multidisciplinary team pathway.  He also provides prosthetic rehabilitation for Oncology patients as part of the South East Wales Head and Neck Cancer MDT.  He is an active Royal college of Surgeons examiner for over 12 years, most recently as a member of the ISFE examiner panel.  He is a past Royal College Speciality Advisor for Restorative Dentistry for Wales. He is an active postgraduate lecturer regionally for Health Education and Improvement Wales and has lectured nationally.  Matthew, and his team, have published several articles on prosthodontics, dental anomalies and other restorative topic areas.
